Watchdog

An IP Watchdog is a tool for failure detection in Ethernet systems. It can use different network protocols to monitor a device that is reachable in the network.

With ICMP, the watchdog sends PING requests to a normally reachable device on the network at regular intervals. If no PING request arrives, the watchdog could automatically reboot a device connected to a PDU.

If the monitored device does not respond to the ICMP protocol, other protocols such as TCP can be used.
