Radius

RADIUS is a protocol developed in 1997. RADIUS stands for Remote Authentification Dial-In User Service and describes an authentication service within a dial-in network. It is used for authentication, authorization and accounting of users. Therefore, RADIUS is often used for user logon in WLAN networks.

A RADIUS server is a central server. Clients turn to this server for authentication in physical or virtual networks. The Radius server checks the user’s user name and password. RADIUS determines required connection parameters from databases, configuration files or queries. This enables centralized management of user data.

RADIUS offers several advantages:

  • Centralized management
  • The user does not need to know the location of the server
  • Accounting simplifies the billing of the services used
