PUE

The abbreviation PUE stands for Power Usage Effectiveness and is a key figure for representing the energy efficiency of data centers, for example. It is calculated as the ratio of the total energy demand of a data center and the energy demand of the IT devices.

A high PUE value stands for an inefficient data center, whereas a low PUE stands for an efficient data center. Values below 1.3 can already be considered an extremely efficient data center. Google, for example, achieves an average value of less than 1.1 for its data centers.

The Power Usage Effectiveness is calculated as follows:

PUE = total energy consumption / energy consumption of IT equipment.

IT equipment includes, for example, servers, storage, network and telecommunications equipment.
